Avandia

Lea, Rhine & Rosbrugh is accepting North Carolina clients who have had a heart attack or stroke while taking Avandia or within 60 days of last ingestion.

Avandia (rosiglitazone maleate) is a drug used to treat type II diabetes and is marketed under the trade names Avandamet, Avandaryl and Avandia. Approved in 1999, Avandia helps control blood sugar levels in diabetics by making patients more sensitive to their own insulin.

The drug has been subject to serious criticism and lawsuits for years.  This criticism and review is heating up.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel met on July 13 and 14, tasked with making recommendations about whether Avandia should be pulled from the market. On July 14, 2010, The New York Times reported that the medical advisory panel recommended that this controversial diabetes drug should either be withdrawn from the market or have sales severely restricted because it increases the risks of heart attacks.  The panel voted after two days of intensive scientific discussions, where GlaxoSmithKline argued that the drug was safe and is a need option to treating diabetes.

Others strenuously dispute the GalxoSmithKline’s assertions.  Panel members appeared skeptical of the company’s trustworthiness after questions were raised about its clinical trials. The discussions surrounded internal company documents that support the contention that the company kept crucial safety information about Avandia from the public and hid these documents for years.
